Investing in your child's athletic ability

Mia Hamm had a soccer coach and the Williams sisters had tennis coaches. It worked for them so why couldn't it work for your daughter? Sitting in a Suzy Strazzulla session feels like money well spent. Once a week goalkeepers of select soccer teams pay Strazzulla to give them a competitive edge. "She has been pretty much through everything that we need to go through. So she understands what we need to work on," said 14-year-old Renee McDermott. Former pro-goalkeeper Suzy Strazzulla has experience, but players are not always good coaches. Parents like how she communicates. She teaches tactics as well as skills. She is demanding yet encouraging. When you are paying up to $75 an hour for training or $20 to $30 for group training you can expect quick results. "You see a dramatic improvement from when you start to when you finish it. And if you do not see that then you need to go somewhere else," said Suzy Strazzulla. Sometimes a good coach is just not a good fit. Look for changes in your daughter's attitude."She did not have the same spark. She did not have the same confidence. She was not happy doing what she was doing," said Cara Black, Renee McDermott's mom. And she will not be happy if she over worked. Muscles need time to recover. It is important to watch for signs of over use injuries. "Joint or muscle pain. Aches at night typically means that there is inflammation and generally pain that does not go away after a day or two," said Melissa Deb La O, physical therapist.

Some girls early on know what they want to be when they grow up. A highly motivated girl with the right coach just might make it happen.
